Caring for your Flour Pot is easy!

Austin Flea is only a few days away! We are so excited and hope to see you there. We've had people wanting to know how to care for Flour Pots. It's easy! All you need is a bright window and little water. Here's some more information for those of you who want to know more!

Succulents are characterized by fleshy tissue that enable them to store water and withstand drought. Most have small root systems and do not require much soil space to thrive.

Most of our Flour Pots will do best indoors in an area with strong, indirect light. Most should not be exposed to direct sunlight more than an hour or two a day. Cacti are the exception and require direct sun four or more hours a day. When placing succulents in a western, southern, or eastern window; back them away from the window so they are receiving strong, but indirect light or use window treatments to filter or diffuse the light.

As a rule, succulents do not require a lot of water. During growing season, spring and summer, water once a week. In the fall and winter when the plant goes dormant, watering once every 3-4 weeks should be enough. Because these succulents are planted in vintage tableware and pots, there are no drainage holes for excess water to escape; so it is important to use small amounts of water to moisten the topsoil where the plant roots are located, but not so much that water begins collecting in the bottom of the container. Water build-up in the container will be damaging to the plants. If your plants are in a draft (air from heat source) they may dry out more quickly. Be sure to monitor and add small amounts of water as needed, but remember, water sparingly. Always let soil dry out completely before adding water. We advise using a spray bottle with the nozzle turned to 'stream' so that you can spray directly to the soil, between the plants, to get to the roots.
